Original post:
Kevin has a brain tumor, and his family is asking for a miracle to cure him. Mother Alphonsa (Rose Hawthorne Lathrop), whose Cause for beatification is open, established the Servants of Relief for Incurable Cancer (now called the Hawthorne Dominicans). Her philosophy: "We must make our guests glad they crossed the threshold that is to be their last boundary. We must make them as comfortable and happy as if their own people had kept them and put them into the very best bedroom. We must love them." Each patient is given the physical, spiritual, and emotional support needed to accept the limitations imposed by illness.
Primary care is given by the nursing sisters. A staff of nursing assistants help the Sisters in the men's wards. Care is very much one-on-one. Each patient has one Sister responsible for his or her care through the whole day, through the whole week. This individual care and attention helps to make the patient feel comfortable and secure, a part of the Sisters' family.
