Doctoral dissertation defenses (difese) are often spectacular events in Rome's Pontifical schools -- here are scenes from the Gregorian, the Lateran, Sant' Anselmo and Santa Croce. It's a bit unusual to have a number of Cardinals attend one's big day, but the level of scholarship can be very high, and sometimes merits such attention. There are always celebrations afterwards. It's not every day that one becomes a Sacrae Theologiae Doctor.
